The Hunter Valley is one of the biggest wine producing regions in Australia, and every year the Hunter Valley association inducts outstanding members of the wine industry as a 'Hunter Valley Legend.' In one of my Design classes at the University of Newcastle, we were given the client brief to design this year's Legends wine label to be printed and used for three specific wines, as well as a Legends logo and packaging. It was a pretty new and challenging experience to have an older, more sophisticated, conservative target group, so I tried to keep things simple and elegant.
During the briefing session given by Bruce Tyrell, one of the things he emphasized was history, so I chose to focus on that and spent some time researching. I learned that the Hunter River plays several roles in the Valley's history and shows just how far the region's heritage dates back, so I used a vectored (bird's eye view) image of the Hunter River as the main design element which runs across the three different wine labels.
