The Kearsarge Expeditionary Strike Group consists of Porter, the amphibious assault ship USS Kearsarge (LHD 3), the amphibious transport ship USS Ponce (LPD 15), the guided missile frigate USS Carr (FFG 52), the guided missile cruiser USS Vicksburg (CG 69), the attack submarine USS Miami (SSN 755) and the dock landing ship USS Gunston Hall (LSD 44).

Storekeeper 3rd Class Kyle Harding, assigned to Navy Customs Battalion (NCB) Romeo, holds his three-month-old son for the first time after NCB Romeo's homecoming at Naval Station Norfolk. NCB Romeo Sailors recently completed a seven-month deployment in support of the global war on terrorism.

Members from Commander, Navy Region Mid-Atlantic Honor Guard, carry the casket of retired Master Chief Boatswains Mate (Master Diver) Carl M. Brashear into the base Chapel aboard Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek, Va., July 29. In May 1966, Brashear had the lower part of his left leg medically removed after suffering an accident at sea. After almost two years of rehabilitation, Master Chief Brashear became the first amputee to be certified as a U.S. Navy diver. Later in 1970 Master Chief Brashear was the first African American to become a U.S. Navy Master Diver. Brashear died from heart and respiratory failure at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, Va., July 25, at the age of 75. Brashear's life was documented in the movie "Men of Honor" starring Cuba Gooding, Jr. and Robert DeNiro.

Boone took part in and completed Neptune Warrior, a course designed to increase coordination between North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and coalition allies.

The guided-missile destroyer USS The Sullivans (DDG 68) and the guided-missile frigate USS Boone (FFG 28) perform Divisional Tactics (DIVTACS) with the guided-missile cruiser USS Monterey (CG 61) for maneuvering formation at sea. Monterey, along with Boone and The Sullivans took part in Neptune Warrior, a course designed to enhance coordination between North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) allies.
