Steilneset is the place where 91 people, mostly women, were tried and executed for witchcraft between 1600 and 1692.
Under torture and threat of death, many of them confessed to having made a pact with the Devil before being burnt at the stake a few metres from the shore, near the castle of Vardø, on the precise spot where Zumthor and Bourgeois’ works now stands.
