Donate
Donate is a book that tells the real life stories of organ donation, exploring how it affects people, and their families in different ways. The stories which are provided by the NHS are all real and based on real people.
The concept behind the book is to get across this idea of ‘donating’ and represent the idea of donating through the use of type. I wanted to emphasise upon the idea of donating as the book is to make people aware of the benefits of being a donor, and how it can create such a huge impact on another person’s life. The design represents this ‘donating’, through the use of cut outs within the book. These cut outs allow certain words from a pull out quote to be use on two pages, as it can be used as it is on one page, and then when you flip the page with the cut out, that certain piece of text is then ‘donated’ onto the other page and used as part of another pull out quote. The use of the cut outs allows part of text to be use within other part of text on a separate page, representing the idea of donating, and how that one thing can be used within another, just like an organ can be used within another person’s body.
There are four chapters within the book and these chapters each within them have sub categories which are the people who the stories are about. I wanted to separate the book into these sections to create this cycle within the pace of the content. The sections are ‘Organ donation’, which provides a brief bit of information on what organ donation is, ‘The waiting game’, which focuses on people who have been on the transplant waiting list and the struggles they face each day, ‘Donated’ which tells the stories of the families who have lost someone and their organs have been donated, and then finally ‘A gift from a stranger’ which is all about people receiving an organ. The idea was that these sections create this cycle within the content, and also break up each section nicely ready to be continued by the next section.
