Mies Van Der Rohe, Designer
Most famously noted for his work at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, and the Seagram Building in New York, the Neue National Galerie in Berlin, Van Der Rohe began his career designing Neoclassical homes. Later, he boldly abandoned ornament altogether and began to design in a dramatic modern style. He sought a solution to efficiency in design through modern industrial materials. Mies found appeal in the use of simple rectilinear and planar forms, clean lines, pure use of color, and the extension of space around and beyond interior walls.
His practice of a geometric and modern aesthetic carried over into his furniture designs, namely the Barcelona Chair, Brno Chair, MR Chair, Tugendhat Chair, MR Loung Chair, and the X Table.
