I am a freshman in the Illustration program and many of my professors don't allow digital art as a medium for projects. Digital painting is the medium I've fallen in love with since high school, and to not use it and use traditional art only has made me very frustrated. Because of using traditional art, my skills in digital improved, but in class I tend to put myself down a lot because my skill in traditional isn't as high as others. So during the end of the second semester, when I had a lot of final projects due (mostly in traditional), I decided to make a digital piece for my health, to calm myself down, and to remind myself I do have artistic skills.
This piece is about me, healing and calming down. The moon symbolizes digital art, and from the moon's influence, and light, the leaves gather to collect the light. From collecting the light, the leaves let my heart (the fruit in my chest) to grow in creativity and to heal. When I was in the process of drawing this piece I didn't want to go to the dining hall to eat, or sleep in my bed. I felt so addicted to it and finally enjoyed drawing in such a long time. But to prevent myself from passing out I did go eat, and went straight back to this piece, and then went to sleep around 1 am. I am glad to say out of all the pieces I've done I feel this was my best piece in my freshman year. Although I don't prefer traditional art, the color class I took this semester had helped me in the process of this piece. It took around 6 hours and I finsihed it within 2 days in the school year.
I used this reference photo I took in the first semester of the school year. I used my lamp as a light source, shot with my Nikon D3100 camera, and turned off the lights in my dorm for this dramatic lighting.

My Moon

This piece is about me healing, and calming down. I made this piece to help me destress during finals week.
