My fall/winter collection titled Mirage
is based on glass panels that are characteristic of ArtDeco architecture. I distilled my inspirational research to two dominantfeatures, namely angular and circular lines, and developed a group of fiveoutfits for each. I interpreted the visual effect of the stained glass as asewing treatment with leather strips and applied it in different areas andvaried sizes to each design. It could be a large, bold pattern on the front of adress, small elements fringing the hem of a coat or sheer panels on the side ofa jacket for a subtler feel. Besides the treatment, I also allowed the lines todictate the overall shape and silhouette of each garment. For example, thecocoon shape for a coat echoes round lines while an exaggerated, pointed collarand lapel complement angular elements.

The interplay of opaque and sheer elements is also whatmakes these glass panels so visually striking and effective. I employed thisidea by juxtaposing and color-blocking solid fabrics like wool, leather andknits with chiffon and organza. A classic shirt is updated by keeping thecollar and placket opaque while making the body chiffon in a contrasting color.Sheer sleeves coming out of a sleeveless coat or a sheer overlay on pants havea similar effect. This creates a contrast of weight and hardness with soft, flowingforms. Silk and exposed zippers add a hint of shine while wool bouclé andcashmere provide texture and richness. The palette remains dark as appropriatefor the season but with hues like burgundy and navy for depth, and lighter hints of beige, camel andblush pink. The overall look is a reinvention of classic pieces with a graphic, modern touch.
