This project requires us to create a fashion spread for a magazine of our choice in the theme of 'Arts and Culture in the City'. Our group chose Biàn Liǎn as our theme and iD as our magazine.
Biàn Liǎn (变脸) is the ancient chinese art of face-changing. Performers wear brightly coloured costumes and vividly coloured masks which they change from one face to another almost instantaneously.
In the past, Bian Lian was only passed on from father to son or master to apprentice, and girls weren’t allowed to learn the art for fear they would marry into another family and give the sacred art form away.
We invite you to let your mind indulge in the art of Bian Lian, and understand the phrase: “ a picture speaks a thousand words” through the magazine spread. Follow a young performer’s journey as she brings the art of face change to the city.
We also created a micro site (in the name of iD magazine) because we felt that iD is a magazine that will want to promote a dying art to their readers.
