In my final set of drawings I analyzed the presence and use of materiality and material grain/modules in Steven Holl's unbuilt Oceanic Retreat. In the final set, I sectionalized the house into five sections. As the house builds vertically, each section shows a new level of floor grain and materiality. With each material, I extended vertical and horizontal lines of the material modules as well as tangent lines for layer two. This rigorous process creates densely rigid grids and reveals a hierarchy in line density. It begins to question why Holl may have used certain materials in certain parts of the house.
Final Site Plan: Contrasting with the rigid and dense grids of the final drawing, I hybridized plan and elevation views as well as my previous hand rendering techniques with my ideas about modular materiality.
