DXB302 || Magazine Design || W01-03

WEEK 01
 
We were asked to form a group of 4 to discuss about the content and theme of our magazine.  The four members of our groups are Grace, Kim and Saxon. Initially, we thought a magazine of design history that consists of four disciplines would be an interesting concept. The four disciplines are Interactive and Visual Design, Interior Design, Architecture and Industrial Design. I was assigned to Industrial Design and I started by looking at the history of the art movement, the inventor and consumer products. 
WEEK 02
 
After much contemplations, we were not happy with the design history topic as we found it a bit dry and rather mundane for a magazine.  We then decided to do a magazine on video games that focuses on the evolution of graphics in games design from arcade to the latest video game. I was responsible for evolution of graphics in action games.
WEEK 03

Each of us had to come up with layouts for the graphics. Some rules has been set out for the layout, such as Avenir Book to be the font of the body with multi-column layout. 
My first draft was a 6 grid column layout. I used striking COLOURS for a stand out header and balanced it with cool tones graphics. After a discussion with my group members, I realised that the bright colours used resulted in unrefined look and garish. It also detracts the attention away from the graphics, which is main attraction of the page. Additionally, the text is too lengthy, which makes the spread appears crowded. This strays away from our group’s chosen style: minimalism. Thus, it should look simple, yet stylish at the same time.
In the second draft I tried to maintain the minimalist style, by adding more white space and less crowded text. A transition from light to heavier background was used so that it will fit in for the horror theme (for the next section genre created by Kim). The layouts then were gathered and showed to the class.
 
Class Feedback: There is a transition between brighter/softer to darker theme/mood. But there seems to be no connection between the four sections. Consistency in font size, font style, and layout design was lacking. 
 
This is due to the lack of communication among the group members. The layouts were produced based on individual's interest not on a common concept that has been discussed by the group.
