Graphics created for the Wellness Institute and Health Learning Center (HLC) of Northwestern Memorial Hospital (NMH) were a stark departure from other NMH graphics. The Wellness Institute featured services such as smoking cessation, weight management and massage therapy with the themes of alternative health, prevention, wellness and a holistic mind/body relationship. The HLC functioned as a library but also offered classes in prevention and education and facilitated efforts such as support groups. The hospital, as a whole, had a general mission to treat or cure disease and assist in healing after injury. These distinctly different service orientations required markedly dissimilar graphic styles. These two entities called for a somewhat customized approach to branding when compared to other departments of the hospital. Though the branding for both the Wellness Institute and the HLC had their own look, they still needed to look like they belonged in the Northwestern Memorial family.
