Sustainable Fast Food Packaging
The concept for this project resolves around the idea ofreducing, reusing and recyclability. For this reason I used as few as possiblematerials and focused on materials that are recyclable and reduces energyconsumption. The target audience is young business men and women, between theages of 18 and 35, who is well educated and has an LSM of 8 and higher. Thepeople that falls under this target audience is most probably not married anddoesn’t have children, but are fast-living and on the move.

Research showed that a laser engraver uses less energy thana laser printer of the same capacity. A medium sized laser printer usesapproximately 0,179 kWh as opposed to a large engraver that consumes between0,012 and 0,045 kWh. Furthermore, is it easier to recycle paper that has beenengraved on, than printed paper because of the process of de-inking that paperhave to go through if it has
been printed on, in order to be recycled. For this reason Ionly used recycled paper and wax paper which has been engraved on. Wax paper keeps food fresh and is 100%recyclable.

I designed solutions for coffee cups, muffins andcombination packaging for a croissant and coffee, since people often buy theseitems together. Using combination packaging also reduces materials, since theitems can be grouped together and doesn’t have to be packaged separately. Styrofoam cups are used because it is proven that althoughpaper in most cases more eco- friendly is than Styrofoam, it is not the casewith cups. Paper cups are lightweight and sanitary, but they don’t insulate aswell as Styrofoam. When they have to hold hot beverages they tend to get toohot to hold and thus more paper has to be used to get the same effect.

Paper is also not water resistant and needs an extramicro-thin plastic lining (LDPE coating) inside of the cup to keep the liquidfrom soaking through. This extra layer makes the paper non-recyclable. Asopposed to Styrofoam cups, the manufacturing of paper cups uses twelve timesmore water, thirty six times more electricity, costs twice as much and usesmore raw materials. A standard paper cup also takes about twenty years todecompose in a landfill environment because of the wax lining inside the cup.
