Fairy Tales by A. S. Pushkin
Book Re-design
The book jacket is printed on clear plastic. It has an image of a cat on an oak tree which is an illustration to the first few lines of the famous poem, “Green Oak by the Shore…”, which is the first poem in this book, and perhaps one of the most famous. This poem also references many other fairy tales that Pushkin has written including some of the ones included in this book. It is therefore appropriate as a motif for the book.
The book jacket goes over a cover that consists of a dark green texture. Dark green is also used throughout the book to relate to the “Green Oak…” poem. The font used for the book title and headings is Benguiat. It has a foreign feel, somewhat reminiscent of the old intricate Slavic lettering, yet is very clean and readable when used for headings.
I used various ornaments throughout the book to reflect the rich floral Slavic patterns, however I kept them small to keep the design clean and contemporary.
I also decided to include the beautiful illustrations from the original Russian book.
