On my first though for this picture I wanted to make it look aged, old, but as I went through the filters I found this ambient light filter 9 from Tiffen that made me instantly stop searching. It did both give me the older look I was going for, and attenuate the lighting on the picture.
In this photo I wanted to achieve a more dramatic conscious look of the cut off tree, giving a desert dry land sort of feel like it is the consequence of cutting down the tree. I was able to do it using the Tiffen special effect color infrared 2 filter.
