Hermann Zapf - A Life Of Type

This was a poster done for the Living Type Lecture Series, which featured the work of Typographer Hermann Zapf. The lock-up uses Zapf’s own “Zapfino” typeface, which has a very sensuous and caligraphic style. Zapf drew deeply from his caligraphic background and it informed his type design. Zapfino is juxtaposed against the conservatively styled Garamond typeface.
The flowing lines that border the midsection echo Zapfino's distinctive charater forms. The radiated gradient helps focus the audience on the display type, while also connoting a feelings of focus and intensity of purpose with regard to the life and work of Mr. Zapf. The center line is referenced for much of the layout. Much of the text is either left aligned to it, or centered on it. This creates a clear structure and logic, which is pleasing to the eye.
