University Project: Research Inquiry

R E S E A R C H - I N Q U I R Y

The Brief
I was asked to produce a piece of writing and project to go along side the
writing on a subject that was personal to me to explore. I chose the subject
of Customer Experience, User Experience and Service Design.

The Solution
This self initiated brief was to explore and write an extended piece of
writing along side a design aspect, but the core of the project was the
research element which intrigued myself the most. The focus of my
research was on Customer Experience, User Experience and Service
Design. I wanted to explore how they relate and overlap one another.
My research led me to investigate how emotions affect the consumer
and ask the question, ‘What is the job of the designer? Is it to manipulate
the emotions of the consumer?’.

The appearance of this piece of writing is in the form of a book, packaged
inside an envelope. My approach for the envelope was to design a patterned
fold out poster that was influenced from my research into where emotions
come from inside the brain. This lead onto visual research into MRI Scans
and visual Neuron patterns. Influenced from this research I created my own
hand-rendered patterns using a number of techniques, then combined them
digitally. The pattern was mirrored to recreate how the brain visually looks
on scans and multiple colours were important to the design to reflect how
all colours can effect consumer emotions.
