An Illustrated Biography - Neil Armstrong

BRIEF

Choose a person from history and create their biography through the use of illustration. Bring them to life and
introduce them to a wider world eager for stories.

AUDIENCE / METHOD

The book I created is aimed at young children aged 4-7 years. I kept a lot of white space within my illustrations as I wanted to emphasise the feeling of flying and space. My illustrations were created through a mixture of hand drawn linear elements with digital colour and collage techniques. To bring my illustrations to life I have used digital techniques such a placing textures into my  scenery and characters.

SOLUTION

I chose to create an illustrated biography about Neil Alden Armstrong, the first man on the moon! His curious, humble personality and inspirational story of having a dream of flying as a child resulted in the concept of telling his inspiring and ambitious story in the form of a children’s book. The book I created was named “Neil Armstrong, the boy that dreamt of flying”.  The story focuses on Neil’s background of flying, where it all began and how this lead him to be the first man on the moon. Many people said Neil remained the same curious boy despite his fame this resulted in him playfully remaining a little boy throughout the book as the images above show. I felt his story would be a wonderful tale for children to read as it could inspire young readers that if they have a dream they can go out and reach it !
