EMIL AND THE DETECTIVES BOOK COVER
While a very quick read, I wanted to focus on the menace that is Grundeis, the villain of the book. He is the driving point of Emil’s actions and is the reason the story comes to pass. To emphasise this fact, his face is a dim orange to contrast with the blue and black of the other colours, looking over everything else. I used him as the base of the image, crafting his coat into something resembling a cape with the Berlin skyline growing down his back, as well as the train where we first meet him riding towards the city. The train also features in Emil’s dream, steering up a building and chasing him. This is also emulated in the image with Grundeis as the looming giant it rides.
