The inspiration for this book comes from my background as someone who comes from China, a communist country, where the leader is always the dominant figure of any news broadcast. As an image, the leader occupies most of the screen’s real estate and time. His image tends to be placed in the center. He is often found observing and studying items, using his eyes to examine the environment. The crew will capture and disseminate these scenes of the leader’s interaction and viewing of objects. This coverage gives me the feeling that the leader is trying to control everything happening in his country. (In reality, it is possible the leader may not even know what is happening in that factory; still, he needs to pretend he understands and is involved, thus demonstrating his power and control.) This portrayal and technique peaked my curiosity. I felt compelled to convey the humor I see in it. Using some romantic quotations to accompany the leader’s looking pictures gives the reader an absurd ironic feeling.
