Boxed Broadway

We were asked to tell a story about ourselves through 16 cards, each following a different design theme (Simplicty, Ornamentation, Geometry, etc.). We also needed to create a form of housing in which to store the cards.

As a theatre performer and enthusiast, I chose to create 16 gouache paintings that expressed my love for Broadway musicals. Each card is formatted in the fashion of a traditional Broadway playbill and has a gouache illustration of a musical that pertains to the given design theme. Inside the card is a relevant excerpt of lyrics or text from the show.

I then housed the cards in a box built to resemble a theater stage, which doubles as a display through which the viewer can see the card under a gold proscenium arch, curtains and stage lights.

Additionally, when the bottom right corner of a card is pressed, a personal rendition of a song from that card's musical is played. The songs that play on each card have been compiled below.
