2015 Sometimes, to interpret what is in front of you, it’s easier to see with someone else’s eyes. It is still you, but through an imagined persona, someone who can understand and appreciate that reality, to explore and discover new corners you haven’t yet seen, not truly seen at least. With this in mind, I decided to create an author surrogate to re-visit Alvalade. This persona could perceive the surroundings as something new and different, appreciating its beauty. As in the Japanese philosophy Wabi-Sabi, the small details and imperfections and the ephemerality of everything is what makes anyone and any place unique. In the end, no matter how ‘exotic’ some cities or neighborhoods may seem, we can always find a familiarity in them. After a while it can become like home, comfortable, safe and invisible. Even considering how easy this predictability is, the challenge may be regaining new perspectives, to overcome the fear of unfamiliarity, the loneliness of it. We need to find the joy in this adventure. Finding new sights and scenarios is inspiring, you learn to see again, and learn to integrate that culture and habitat. This creates a new facet of yourself, it makes you grow as a person and as an author. Through all the times we roamed alone in Alvalade we found its most secluded nooks. The organized chaos, the forgotten corners, the silence, but also the enchantment of its’ history, the remains of long gone days, unchanged and cherished, that make it still so special today. Together we set in search for a common place, but we still don’t know if it exists. Read Less
