Edward Lear: Book of Nonsense
For this brief I was asked to recreate visuals for Edward Lear's famous nonsense literature. The current illustrations which accompany Lear's limericks are quite old and the brief asked for new visuals to be created that could accompany his nonsense poetry. With a brief so open, I researched the limericks and thought about how I could represent them in new ways...

I decided to create visuals that would be appropriate for an older audience rather than for a children's book. I thought making illustrations for a gift book or stylish publication that could be sold in art shops, at exhibitions and in book stores which could be purchased as a collectors item. The book would be for people who appreciate Lear's work and could be published around special art events or as a celebration of his works and career.

Known for his absurd wit, I wanted to reflect this in a literal sense in my illustration style. I created detailed collage style illustrations using fine liners on white card. I wanted to keep the illustrations simple and stylish to reflect the audience I was aiming to attract...
There was an Old Man with a beard,
Who said, 'It is just as I feared!
Two Owls and a Hen,
Four Larks and a Wren,
Have all built their nests in my beard!'

Initial illustrations for the brief!
There was an Old Man of Marseilles,
Whose daughters wore bottle-green veils;
They caught several Fish,
Which they put in a dish,
And sent to their Pa' at Marseilles.
