Spring Semester of Second Year

The Hamilton Apartment
In the beginning of the semester we were given a detail and we had to recreate boxes that incorporated this detail. The detail that I chose was a column from a building called Cascades Academy of Central Oregon designed by Hennebery Eddy Architects. The images below represent the detail that I have chosen. The close up and an image of the detail in the space.
Client
We then were able to choose a client. My client was Bethany Hamilton, and she is a professional surfer. She was born in Hanalei, Kauai, Hawaii. In 2003 she was attacked by shark that resulted in losing her left arm. Not even a month after her accident, she went right back to surfing because she did not want to miss the biggest surfing competition at the time. She loves to surf and she loves faith. She also plays soccer because she enjoys the teamwork and the running. She is very athletic and cannot be sitting for too long or else she would get bored. Bethany even does exercise videos to show her workout routine also she wants to help others be healthier. She travels around the world, meeting influential and impactful people; she helps countries that have been affected by natural disasters like floods and tsunamis’. She likes to inspire people to follow their dreams and to help people who have been affected by natural disasters.
Detailed Boxes
After we chose the detail we created boxes. I decided to do two boxes that were just of the column itself, and the last one I decided to incorporate the slatted wood shown behind the column in the close up image. The first iteration I tested out was to make the column but to extrude the metal outward and made the bottom solid but the materials I used seemed heavy. The second iteration I made the metal that intersected the wood a void and the bottom like the detail. In the third and last iteration I wanted to incorporate the slatted wood that was on the wall near the column. I combined the first and second iteration by extruding the metal outward but leaving a void on the bottom.
Box iterations 1-3
Bookshelf
We created a bookshelf that was inspired by our box iterations. I decided to use a metal frame that connected each other.
Work Space

For the work space I decided to reverse the slatted wood with metal to be able to fit into the staircase. (You will see further below). As the semester progressed I made a few changes to the work space. I changed the doors to solid glass and not textured. The steel rods that are vertical would extend to the ceiling of the first floor, which would be about twelve feet. Instead of there being graphics that differ from each other, I decided to do one big graphic along a wall in the main space and connected the couch to the stairs with this graphic.
Entry Door
After the work space we were told to design an entry door for our apartment. I wanted there to be a large dramatic door handle but that also blends in with the door. I pretty much took my detail and made it into a grand door that is ten feet tall.

Furniture I Have Designed
I wanted to make the apartment as personal as possible and wanted everything to be customed. As you see down below I have made various furniture pieces that are included in the apartment. I have designed the living room couch, the guest bedroom bed, master bedroom bed, the chandelier that is in the master bedroom, and the table lamps. I have also designed the kitchen cabinets and island, the chairs in the living room, the couches that are in the family room which is on the second floor, the master and guest sinks, the curtain wall (including the door), the dining room table and chandelier, and lastly the interior doors.
(None of these are post processed)
Floor Plans
First Floor
For the first floor I wanted to keep it as an open floor plan. Keeping in mind that my client is a very family oriented person, I wanted for the client to walk in the front door and be able to see everything and see the view. I also wanted a lot of natural light on the main floor to make it kind of feel like one was outside. When one walks in your eyes immediately see the outdoors and the balcony. On the left is a storage closet that can hold Bethany's surf boards, and one can slide the door left or right for easy access to the contents inside. When one looks to the left they see the staircase and how the steel rods extend from the floor to the roof. Under the staircase is where the work space is located, the back of the steel rods extend to flow along with the bottom of each stair.

In the front right corner is the living space and along that wall I wanted to connect the two spaces by continuing the steel rod and only keeping the graphics with the furniture pieces. (Shown in living room render) Next to the living room is the dining room; I wanted to keep the dining room opened to the kitchen so that when anyone who is cooking can easily talk to the guests who are at the table. The kitchen is a bigger kitchen to allow many people to use it at once.

If one would round the corner on the left as you enter, there are three doors. The first one is an extra storage closet for coats or anything else. The second door is the water heater and furnace and the last door is the half bathroom.

Second Floor
On the second floor of the condo you are greeted with a bright family room. As one walks up the staircase, they look up and see the sky light, or they can look down to see that it is open to the main floor. There are two bedrooms located on this floor; the master bedroom and the guest bedroom. Each bedroom has their own on suite bathroom. Laundry room is on the second floor for easy access and it is attached to a spare room that can be for any purpose.
