Unity's Women in Gaming initiative was created to highlight the the female aspect of the gaming community and to combat the sexism still present in the games industry despite it being the 21st century. First I looked at the many groups already titled Women in Gaming. I focused on the 'W' rather than creating something that could be perceived as too feminine/feminist. I also avoided using a 'gaming' metaphor in favor of a more mature identity that reflected the Unity brand and it's 3D platform.
I started by pulling apart an existing logo searching for a cool way to do a W.
I wanted it to be asymmetrical in some way.
I hit upon the darker version by chance when I put slightly transparent version of the logo over a dark background.
