The project began when I found an old stereo viewer and some stereo slides, which had been hidden and forgotten for years in my cellar. The viewer was purchased by my grandma's uncle, while the slides were probably realized by the uncle himself (he worked as a engineer but photography was his favorite hobby) during the 1930s.
Il progetto è iniziato quando ho rinvenuto un vecchio visore stereoscopico e alcune diapositive, che giacevano da anni nella mia cantina, dimenticati. Il visore fu acquistato dallo zio di mia nonna, mentre le diapositive sono state probabilmente realizzate da lui stesso (lavorava come ingegnere, ma aveva l'hobby della fotografia) negli anni '30.
The slides show several subjects: landscapes (a meadow, a lake, a countryside with some horses on the foreground), views of the cities of Merano and Sinigo, interiors of a hydroelectric plant, and many other subjects. Each slide has a left photo and a right photo. Watching it with the stereo viewer, the two photos are superimposed and it's possible to have a stereoscopic vision of the scene. Unfortunately, due to the age, most of the slides were damaged: almost all had at least a crack, and lots of them had the glass broken in several parts.
Le diapositive mostrano diversi soggetti: paesaggi (un prato, un lago, una scena di campagna con alcuni cavalli in primo piano), viste delle città di Merano e Sinigo, interni di una centrale idroelettrica e molto altro. Ogni diapositiva presenta una foto sinistra e una foto destra: guardandole con il visore, le due foto vengono sovrapposte ed è possibile avere una visione stereoscopica della scena. Purtroppo, a causa degli anni, la maggior parte delle diapositive sono in cattivo stato: quasi tutte presentano almeno una crepa, e molte hanno il vetro rotto in più parti.
I decided to give new life to these slides, by using digital technology to make possible to watch the stereograms without using the stereo viewer.
I chose seven slides from the catalog, not the best preserved, but certainly the best ones. Of course most of them were damaged, so the first step was the photo restoration: each slide were scanned and then digitally restored with Adobe Photoshop. In the second step, again with Adobe Photoshop, I used the anaglyph technique to make the slides live again: the left and right photos, now restored, are superimposed but are separated, so each eye sees only the desired image by the use of coloured filters (red and cyan) and appropriate viewing spectacles.
(I recommend to use the red and cyan glasses to watch the anaglyphs correctly)
Ho deciso di dare nuova vita a queste diapositive utilizzando la tecnologia digitale per renderne possibile la visione stereoscopica senza l'utilizzo del visore.
Ho scelto sette diapositive tra quelle rinvenute; il loro stato di conservazione non è perfetto, ma sono certamente le più belle del catalogo. Il primo passo è stato il restauro: ogni diapositiva è stata scansita e poi restaurata digitalmente con il software Adobe Photoshop. Nella seconda fase, di nuovo con Adobe Photoshop, ho utilizzato la tecnica dell'anaglifo per far "rivivere" la stereografia: le foto di sinistra e di destra, ora restaurate, si sovrappongono ma rimangono separate, in modo che ogni occhio veda solo l'immagine desiderata mediante l'uso di colorati filtri (rosso e ciano) e adeguati occhiali di visualizzazione.
(Raccomando l'uso degli occhiali con lenti rossa e ciano per osservare gli anaglifi in modo corretto)
