TRIÚR NUNS (THREE NUNS)

One time in a local house, a young man who lived with his mother was sleeping. His room was in the attic above the fireplace. It was a moonlit night and he saw a bright light on the gable of the house. He looked out and could see a car with bright headlights. In the next instance three figures appeared inside his bedroom. Three nuns. The young man and his mother never spent another night in that house.

FÍS | INSEACHT is a visual arts collaboration between Irish filmmaker Cathal Ó Cuaig and German photographer Katharina Gebhardt. FÍS | INSEACHT, which roughly translates from Gaelic to English as "VISION | TELLING", was officially opened in Áras Sorcha Ní Ghuairim, Carna on Monday April 2, 2012 and since then has been exhibited at the Galway Fringe Festival and in Berlin.

This project evolved from work carried out by Ó Cuaig in collecting folkloric stories historiographies from Connemara, a rural area in the west of Ireland. A thematically broad range of stories have been collected. These include religious stories, ghost stories, stories of the living memory “old time,” comedic stories and superstitions.

In the end, nine of these were selected for this installation, which encompasses video and photography. Katharina Gebhardt has spent a number of years as a visual artist, photographer and director in Berlin. Cathal Ó Cuaig is an independent filmmaker and a native of Connemara.

FÍS | INSEACHT is just at its beginnings.

Setting off in 2013 where the Brothers Grimm made their mark 200 years ago in Kinder- und Hausmärchen, oral histories from Ireland and Germany are conjoined in a contemporary audiovisual interpretation.

Our central goal is to provide an “out of the suitcase exhibition” that can travel far and wide, a suitcase can collect old stories and provide new ones when reopened!

Katharina Gebhardt, a trained and accomplished actor, has spent a number of years as a visual artist, photographer and media designer in Berlin. Galway native Cathal Ó Cuaig is an independent filmmaker who works in both documentary and fiction.
FEARÍN FÉASÓGACH (LITTLE BEARDED MAN)

As a child I was sent to bring the cows home and I saw this little man sitting under a big rock. He wasn’t dressed for the era we lived in, his clothes were different and he had a funny beard. I ran home terrified and told my Dad. He was interested but my mother did not believe me. People always took shelter from the rain under that large rock. Once, a young man had just left from under the rock when it came crashing down. He would have been squashed if he had been under it a minute longer.

COINNLE NA DTAIBHSÍ (GHOST CANDLES)

A young child is sent to the shop to buy candles. On their return they visits a neighbor's house and overhear a ghost story. On their way home in the dark they hear a strange noise. They sprints home, but the faster they goe the louder and closer the noise. Only at home do they realize that the noise was that of the candles in their pocket.

FÍS | INSEACHT

Meascán d’fhís/scéal/inseacht atá sa togra seo, de réir leide an teidil. Ní scéalta go díreach atá iontu ach píosaí beaga cainte, giotaí de scéalta agus seanchais. An tslí atá na scéalta á n-inseacht ar chuir Cathal suim ann agus é á dtaifead, chomh maith leis na scéalta féin. Inseacht eile ar na scéalta atá sa taispeántas grianghraf seo. D’fhás an togra ealaíne as roinnt scéalta béaloideas ó cheantar Iorrus Aithneach a ndearna Ó Cuaig taifead orthu le bliain anuas. Bailíodh scéalta ar réimse mór ábhar, ina measc scéalta maidir le taibhsí, scéalta maidir leis an seansaol, scéalta grinn agus piseoga. Sa deireadh roghnaíodh naoi scéal faoi leith astu seo agus is iad sin atá le feiceáil sa phíosa ealaíne suiteála seo. Beidh meascán d’fhís agus de ghrianghraif á dtaispeáint. Tá Katharina Gebhardt de ghnách bunaithe i mBeirlín mar fhísealaíontóir, ach d’oibrigh sí ar an togra seo i nGaillimh le linn 2012. Is as Áill na Brún do Chathal Ó Cuaig agus tá sé ag plé le scannánaíocht le roinnt blianta anuas. Bhuaigh a chéad scannán ‘An Cluiche’ gradam amach ag an Sandpoint Film Festival, Idaho, S.A.M. le gairid.

AN CAT AGUS AN TOBAC (THE CAT AND THE TOBACCO)

People used to send their cows into the mountains in the summer in order for the grass to grow on the farm. Some of them would have a hut in which they could sleep when tending to the cows in the mountains. One local man got lost in the mountain as a heavy fog descended on the area. He walked around but could not find his way home. He found a house and knocked on the door. An old man with a long beard let him in. The man asks the old man for a glass of water and takes a seat by the fire. He notices a cat staring at him who is chewing tobacco. The cat is strange and when the man leaves the car attacks him. The old bearded man has the cat stop and explains that the cat has been in the house for all eternity and that he is one of the ‘old people’. The man leaves and when he turns around the house has disappeared.
