Mental Health Awareness Week 2015: self portrait series

Mental illness: a disease of the brain that causes mild to severe disturbances in thought and/ behavior, resulting in an inability to cope with life's ordinary demands and routines.
There are more than 200 classified forms of mental illness. Some of the more common disorders are: clinical depression, bipolar disorder, dementia, schizophrenia, and anxiety disorders. Symptoms include changes in mood, personality, personal habits and/or social withdrawal.

How can you help an individual with mental health problems?
Be human: Acknowledge your concern. Show them love and understanding. Listen without judgment. Discuss all of their options(different methods of treatment). Treat them with the same respect as you do others. Refuse to define them by their diagnosis.

("If you know someone who is depressed please resolve to never ask them why...Try to understand the blackness and loneliness they're going through. Be there for them when they come through the other side. It's hard to be a friend to someone who's depressed , but it is one of the kindest, noblest and best things you can do."
