DIPUTACIÓN FLAT
Reform of a modernist flat in the Eixample of Barcelona

Featured on Behance Interior Design.

To be called to reform an historical classified flat is a dialogue between the respect due to a well preserved building, with a nice architecture and materials of quality – which are now seen in a different way – and a way of living which has nothing to do with the culture and way of life of the present clients. The standards of comfort, the number of inhabitants per flat and their behavior when at home have changed.

This challenge was cleared up by settling the living area by the internal “patio” of the block and settling the bedrooms in the opposite area, viewing the street and the classified “patio”. The two areas are linked by a corridor where the main entrance and bathrooms open on to.
The living-room joins the bedrooms putting the dividing walls down up to the mouldings, taking advantage of their prints to light up the different atmospheres thus created: the kitchen backed to the party wall, the dining room in contact with the “patio”, the office in the gallery. It is provided by natural light and crossed ventilation.

The three bedrooms are organized around very thick walls which include a wardrobe on each side. Two of them open on the street and the third one on a “patio”. The kids’ bedrooms take advantage of the height difference between the ceiling and the top of the wardrobe to put the bed in this kind of mezzanine, so that the sleeping area is more intimate and the rest of the room can be dedicated to study or play.

In the internal area of the flat, two symmetrical bathrooms open on a dressing-room with natural light and which can be closed, creating thus more privacy and increasing its possibilities of use.

The raw materials as well as the decorative ones make a clear evidence of the dialogue. An oak waxed floor unifies all the reforming works which make a second use of most of the original elements worth it; they are incorporated in the different atmospheres but in another way: plaster medallions, cornices which – in the case of the main bedroom - still bear angels’ heads in each of the four corners, internal and external carpentry, original hydraulic mosaics to protect the humid zones.

The final result is a flat which, dignifying the memory of the original elements, respecting and enhancing the positive features of the ancient building, perfectly fits its spaces to the needs and sensibility of the present owners and inhabitants.
