The Zen of Hank Moody
A Study of My Favorite Television Character, A Terminal Romantic.

I think that the best show on television right now is David Duchovny's Showtime Original Series, "Californication, which must seem to most people to be nothing more than a celebration of sexual freedom in perhaps the perfect place for it all... Hollywood, California. The show has recently concluded its 5th season, as Duchovny brilliantly reprised the role of Hank Moody, the poster boy for male prowess- a brash, unapologetic ladies man and terminally romantic writer/novelist, transplanted from his native New York to Venice Beach. The show offers everything needed to be sexy and enticing- inluding storylines about screenwriting for gangsta rappers, an obnoxious stripper and a whole lot of hidden selflessness from Hank... all for his wife and daughter.

The "Zen of Hank Moody" is about letting go of the need to be in the spotlight of heroism. It's about not allowing anyone you know and love, that you've sacrificed most of your dignity... as well as your carefully hidden vulnerabilities and needs... and that you [Hank] take comfort in the meaningless flings... because it's not about "you" at all... it's about the people you love and cherish and protect with every ounce of your being...
