This exhibition is a deconstruction of the conceptual design frameworks that scaffold a literary publication. Central to this is the role of the cover as a representational artifact of the literary creative, translated through the language of design to achieve cognitive synesthesia. Within the superstructure of the covers, the font lays the foundation for the text, and erects the supporting pillars with kerning, size and typographical choices.
Building upon this are the titles, headers, numericals, authorial credits and other design elements that compose the inner architecture of the literary edifice. And surrounding all this, the walls and floors are akin to the distinctive building material of print – the style, texture and weight of paper.
The hand of the designer is as clear in the composition of a book as the distinctive touch of an architect, but ultimately provides the stable outer form and structure – opening up the inner space for plot, characters, themes and associated literary devices to inhabit the empty rooms and hallways and infuse them with life and energy.
The exhibition will also adopt the pentacle of perspectives to examine the literary edifice from multiple external points of view – the Author; the Designer; the Publisher; the Reader; and the Bookseller.
