ISTD: Tales to change the word
The aim of this project was to create a book design with the experimental feel of a magazine, to bring features that magazines have developed over many years from the striking double page spreads, challenging hierarchies and the signature typographic styles that identify each magazine from that last. My approach to this project after reading ‘the waitress’ was that I wanted to focus of the development of the characters in particular the relationship between Marie and the chair. I felt that at the beginning of the story there is a big surprise and sense of confusion on Maries’ part when she talks to a chair that is strangely located on her back and as the story progresses I think the chair become an even bigger part of the story and the relationship between them becomes in some ways normalized even to a point were at the end the chair isn’t even present in the story
My aim was to represent the growing character of the chair by showing it through growing page sizes starting with very small tip ins up to full size pages but as the story continues the chair fades into a myth, this is also featured in the cover pages where the yellow card stock is slightly hidden from view.

One of the most significant messages from tha story to me was the line ’people only see what they want to see’ this made me think of giving the viewer a small glimpse of some thing but never completely revealing it this lead me to the idea of a spot varnished image of a chair at a very large scale so it bleeds off the page and at first glance all you see is the typography but looking closer you see a slight dark tone running along the page and with further examination through the pages the viewer should be able to piece together that it is in fact an image of a chair.
