Maker vs. Muse: Art Museum Booklet

This brochure was created to aid museum patrons through an exhibit: Maker vs. Muse. This exhibit features artwork spanning prehistory through 1399 and explores the relationship between artists and their muses through history. Because the exhibit is quite broad, the design needed to be able to compliment all works and styles of art, while still attracting more viewers to the event. Lastly, the final piece needed to be easy to navigate and understand as it guides the viewer through each room of the exhibit.

Research
Art museums in general use a lot of muted colors and cool tones. Formal fonts are utilized often, as well as brown, regal backgrounds. Some museums, such as the Milwaukee Art Museum take a more modern approach, which is what I was aiming for.

Concept and Solution
I chose to utilize a muted red like many other museums, but complimented the color scheme with a bright teal. I created 3D Headlines for each page to draw the viewer in. Although the design elements are fairly modern, they still compliment older and historical works.

Target Market
Museum goers, families, parents, teachers, school administrations, art lovers, academics, philanthropists, artists, and yacht clubs.

Brand Message: educate, create, and explore.

Logo Development Stages: Featuring concepts I initially brainstormed and sketched.
First I began with 4 signatures, two pages each. I chose to use two pages instead of four to add more strength in the binding, considering this book is fairly thin.
I then sewed the signatures together using a traditional saddle-stitch method. I chose a thick grey thread for this task. This is a fairly maddening task, so to stay sane, put on a cartoon to enjoy or something.
Next, I sent the booklet through a perfect binder to reinforce the spine. This step is unecessary, because the book is sewn. However, I wanted to ensure the book was durable because it would be passed between many different people during the course of the exhibit.
For the cover, I used chip board. After gluing the cover images to the chipboard, I wrapped thin, red paper around the spine to complete the outside. Lastly, I glued the outermost pages of the booklet to the inside chip board covers.
