Gift project: 3DS XL (2015) decal for Christmas 2015
My boyfriend I are are quite the Animal Crossing addicts, so I thought I'd make him a custom 3DS design of all the things he liked in AC: New Leaf.
"Swell Together" was a watercolor doodle I had painted of his and my mayoral characters a long while ago, so I decided to use it as the main illustration for the decal.
...With a few tweaks, of course. Mainly our character's hair colors switched to pink and green, as we were usuals of our own towns' local Shampoodle, or hair dresser. However, my character's pink hair now matched the pink heart in the background, so a few contrasting changed needed to be made to the composition as well. This was all completed digitally though Adobe Photoshop.
Modeling off of some special limited edition 3DS that had an Animal Crossing themed skin, I singled out four of my boyfriend's favorite things in AC: New Leaf. His town is mostly a dense forest he uses to farm perfect apples, so the tree and the apple were the easiest two symbols to paint. The robot series is his favorite furniture set, so I figured a robot head would work itself well into the design. The last bit I needed to pull things together was something yellow, so I figured a bag of bells would work, as he would rake in millions selling his perfect apples at my town.
With the four icons painted and fixed up into pngs, I went to work designing a colorful background that the icons would go on in Adobe Illustrator. The end result came out more yellow, but the original concept was something brown of beige, as that was his town's official colors. In the end, the yellow and tan stripes went really nicely with the warm, diamond patterned shirts in the illustration.
I had the designs printed through DecalGirl, so all the elements were set up digitally into the 3DS XL (2015) template they provided to me. Once the designs were sent out, the decals came back in time for Christmas, and were super easy to apply onto the 3DS's case. Supposedly, they're easy to take off, as well, but for now he says it still makes him smile whenever he sees his DS.
