Jeffreys Bay Craft Brewery

THE J-BAY CB STORY
Jeffreys Bay Craft Brewery’s lineup of craft beer (aka. J-Bay CB), is inspired by the combination of top quality locally sourced ingredients, infused with the combination of the unique environment and legacy of Jeffreys Bay, the history of surfing in South Africa, and a surfers stoke, hence the slogan – “Beer Brewed for Surfers, by Surfers”.

Whether you’re a surfer or not, deep down inside there is always the mysteriousness of what it feels like to be succumbed by the power of the ocean and for those whom have had the opportunity, the memory of racing down the line on a wave face at Jeffreys Bay. This is the liquid-stoke which J-Bay CB wants to encapsulate in its lineup of craft beers.

J-Bay CB will also be paying tribute to South African surfing legend who shaped the first foam surfboards in the country, John Whitmore aka. “The Oom” and to Captain Jeffreys, legendary to J-Bay after sailing past the bay on many trade expeditions during the 1840’s and eventually landing in the Bay in the 1850’s. Jbay CB’s goal is to re-ignite the spirit and the passion of these legends contribution to the history of Jeffreys Bay and how it shaped surfing in South Africa.

Beer Style
A deeply satisfying cold filtered full drinking LAGER – for CHARGERS.
This beer is brewed from a combination of local, Munich and Crystal malt with a sucrose adjunct making it highly drinkable with a distinct malt forward flavour. The beer is slightly darker and “pleasing to the eye”. This beer has a medium Bitterness Unit (BU) of 21. Late hopping with German aromatic hops gives it a distinctive hop aroma and flavour. Lagered at – 1.5 deg c to bring out the crisp refreshing malt and hop flavours. A lively beer with a carbonation level of 2.5 vols.

Boneyards story
Top-most break of the famous Jeffreys Bay Line up. On smaller swells, could be regarded as a reef break, running left and right. Yet on bigger swells, the right, being the birthplace of one of the longest rides of your life. Less predictable, shifty take off zone. Aptly named Boneyards for its somewhat rounder, bigger, heart stopping barrels. Be sure not to be caught inside, be sure to know when a set arrives….

Beer Style
A highly drinkable cold filtered light lager - From the line up.
The combination of local Lager Malt with a small amount of Caramel Aromatic Malt added gives a slight colour uplift and an aromatic caramel malty taste and smell. The beer has a Bitterness Unit (BU) of 20 which is slightly lower than most beers in South Africa. Local hops is used in combination with German and USA aroma hops to give the beer a pronounced aromatic hop flavour. A crisp lively beer with a carbonation level of 2.5 vols.

Super Tubes story
The most MAJESTIC, right hand point break wave in the world. A modern day surfer’s only link to wave riding heritage and pure surfing ecstasy. There is every desire to forget ones manoeuvres and just feel the ocean beneath your toes. You have the time, so reflect & give thanks. A wave that ‘has it all’ and is as enthralling to watch as it is to ride. The only reason not to be one of the natural wonders of the world?... Is it doesn’t happen everyday…
Beer Style
A smooth, very pleasant character PILSENER of PERFECTION with a full malty flavour enhanced by the after taste and aroma of some of the finest hops in the world.
Local, Munich and Crystal malt are used to give the beer the necessary colour. This beer has a slightly higher Bitterness Unit (BU) of 22. Hopped with South African bittering but underpinned with Czech Saaz and German Hallertau Perle aroma hops. The beer will have a very drinkable bitterness without any harshness but with a very discernible hop aroma due to traditional late hopping. A smoother beer with a carbonation level of 2.2 vols.

Magna Tubes story
Some who haven’t ridden it, may say it’s mediocre. Others who have ridden it, may say it’s world class. A tide dependant right hander that opens its doors to a slightly alternate wind range and smaller swells. Has more to offer than some may think. Write your own story…

Beer Style
A different, flavourful character Amber Ale for Soul Surfers.
An AMBER ALE has a distinctive caramel, toffee and malt taste brought about by the use of aromatic and pale malt. This type of ale has a strong aromatic hop aroma and flavour, this when balanced with the malt flavours gives it a high drinkability and balance to its nose and taste. It has a shining rich dark colour with a sparkling visual effect together with a dazzling white foam head in the glass. The bitterness is not too prevalent at a BU of 22. A smoother beer with a carbonation level of 2.1 vols.

Albatross story
A piece of the Jeffreys coastline puzzle that gets ignored by some and simply forgotten by others. A supposed end to one of the longest waves in the world. Yet in its own right, creates a nostalgic platform from which to recall some of the most peaceful, fun, leg burning rides of your life.

Beer Style
A filtered Pale Ale for Settlers with distinctive fruitiness and acidity which gives it a smooth mouth feel.
The Pale Ale originated in the British Isles and became popular in India and America after ships’ Captains transported it across the oceans.
The first thing you will see is the bright darkish golden colour which will stimulate your taste buds, the first sip will confirm what your eyes told you. Similar to other Ale beers it is brewed with a lot of Aroma hops and coloured Malt. The bitterness is more prevalent at a BU of 24. The carbonation level is lower than most Lagers, this gives the Ale a smooth drinkability and you will find that the foam head will hold up without being too gassy.

Captain Jeffreys story
A romantic historical tale from the early 1800s tells of a wooden cargo sail ship under the command of a Captain Jeffreys. During one of his trading expeditions down the East Coast of Africa an epidemic of scurvy broke out aboard his ship. He was forced to land his ship on the local beach. Captain Jeffreys and a handful of survivors made it safely to shore. The ship was battered to pieces on the rocks during storms and the last remains of that wooden ship was a wooden banister that still exists today. It is claimed that Jeffreys Bay was named after Captain Jeffreys. This beer is brewed to honour Captain Jeffreys, the sailors and settlers that braved the stormy Atlantic and Indian oceans to sail from Europe to settle in South Africa.

Beer Style
A German–style  un-filtered yeast-turbid wheat beer locally  called Whitmore’s Mellow “ Weizen”.
The traditional German beer recipe has been crafted  locally to suit South African tastes with a combination of  57% pale lager malt, 43% pale wheat malt and a touch of caramel aromatic malt for colour. A speciality top fermenting ALE yeast strain is used during the warm fermentation and this results in the characteristic banana ester flavours with a slight hint of cloves. The beer will have a  bitterness of 16BU achieved by traditional late hopping with a suite of 3 aromatic hop varieties, German, Czech and American. This weizenbier is highly carbonated to a level of 2.5 vols.

The Oom story
John Whitmore, from Cape Town, affectionately known as “THE Oom”, first built hollow plywood long boards in the 50’s for himself and his friends to surf waves  around the Cape Peninsula. In 1954 he created the first foam surfboard in South Africa. He owned the first Kombi to be made in South Africa. He created the first South African roof racks. As a salesman for the VW factory in Port Elizabeth he often drove back and forth from Cape Town to PE and in the mid 50s on one such trip he discovered the waves at Jeffreys Bay. His tales led Capetonians Gerald “Gus” Gobel and Brian “Block” McClarty to the Point, where they became the first  people to surf the legendary waves of J Bay.
This beer is brewed to honour “The Oom”, the FATHER of South African surfing.
