First a 3d model of an actual hole was produced. A Checker pattern was applied to its surface. This hole was made to the exact size of the intended rug in 3d space (3.5m)
This model and model space lighting was refined. Then a camera was created at an average human's viewing level, relative to the hole in 3d space. An image of this was rendered out.
This render was then stretched so that the perimeter of the hole was a perfect sphere. Colour and lighting was adjusted in photoshop. This was then brought into illustrator where it was converted into a vector image
The vector image was then used to create the rug. Designer Rugs Australia made this happen. When viewed from the same position of the original camera render the 2d pattern on the rug transforms it into a 3 dimensional 'Black Hole'
