Making a Pastry Typeface
During a recent brief – The Waitress Text – I ended up creating a pastry typeface. The process was fairly simple.
 
I used cookie cutters for the letters but had to sculpt the punctuation myself and after testing various pastry types, such as puff and shortcrust, I found that puff gave the best finish.
Below is the typeface before it was baked. All of the letters are sans serif and finished will an egg wash to give them a nice glaze. I made sure I spaced the letters out so they would not stick together when baking.
And the result...
The next step was to turn it digital so that I could set it into a book. To do this I individually shot each letter on a copy stand and then imported them into photoshop. Once cleaned up they were ready to be set using a baseline grid. See the outcome here...
