Commissioned Painting - Process

My brother & his wife commissioned a large triptych painting for their new house.  I don't usually work in "pure abstract" so they felt their brief would be a challenge for me.

I often do very layered work; I want my work to appear a certain way at a distance and to reveal more and more information the closer you get to it.

My brother retired from the Air Force recently and they wanted a painting that incorporated many of the places they have lived and worked.  Consequently, Montana, Japan, Okinawana and Afghanistan all make appearances.  I requested that they send me favorite poems, quotes, written work that could be incorporayted into the painting as well.

My sister-in-law has worked extensively with Habitat for Humanity, building homes so we incorporated blueprint and construction elevations as well.

Everyone in their family plays music so we also added musical motifs.

For the layering I used iron-on transfers, gel medium transfers and gesso transfers.  I painted in both acrylic, encaustic and oil.

Applying the gel-medium transfers to the underpainting.
Lovingly known as the "Rooster Roadkill" stage.  It goes away...
