James-I began by researching into a load of different techniques such as mixing 2D and live action footage and pixelation. But doing tests with charcoal and producing the final the animatic helped me make the decision of using charcoal instead of any other medium. It was important that throughout the clip the movements timed with the conversation to replicate the fluid feeling of the sea. In the end I made around 107 frames for the animation and I miss TVPaint.
Esme- I love the more unusual techniques of animation and my strengths lie in 2D drawings and designs so I thoughts I’d work all this into a paint on glass animation. Paint and the sea are connected naturally through the movements and shapes they both make; this movement ended up working to my advantage.
In the end I just wanted to make an animation where I could get my hands messy and have fun with it!
Mia-I wanted to make my work using Linocut print cut outs. I decided to look at cross hatching and engraving references for this project as she wanted a bold but simple concept for her work.I really enoyed learning a new way of printing and cross hatching and added a new piece of equipment that i have used, the multiplane which is just amazing!
Emma- I choose to use ink and water for my part of the animation as the medium lends itself nicely to animating waves and bodies of water. I played around with black and blue ink on different types of paper and even added to sea salt which drew out some of the ink and created a gorgeous effect.
By combining 2D digital animation with ink animation I tried to keep it looking as organic as possible.
Luca- I set my initial research on the track that the team selected. Searching the internet which technique use, I came across the Paper Craft Stop-motion Animation, which uses differents layers of paper to create the background and characters. I was fascinated by this technique and I decided to create the animation in that way. Firstly I made an animation in TVPaint, to allow me to organise the work. After this step I did a test with simple little coloured papers. After that I studieda way to move the waves, building a structure of 4 pieces of paper overlapping which allowed me to move them without difficulty.
