California Horses

Paint and Friend are two characters watching me paint plein air at Three Feathers Ranch in Capay Valley. Spirited and young, Paint was perfectly entertaining through out the morning, so much so, that when I left, I wanted to make sure he stayed in my world. Hence I present his portrait, along with a friend.

Capay Valley Bay.
Old Windmill.  On a very hot August morning, these stately draught horses were seeking shade under a windmill structure.
Pez.  This horse is the epitome of all things HORSE.  He is young, only 6 years old, learning, working, spirited and intensely beautiful.
Two Horses at Capay Valley shows several of the draught horses at the Three Feathers Ranch finding shade under a very old wind mill. The nearest horse watches me as I zoom around taking pictures. I love the quote by Johannes Jensen perfectly describing the trust  these great animals have for their circumstances. "The horse through all its trials has preserved the sweetnessof paradise in its blood."
Barrel Racer
The task of carting the moon through night sky was carried out by a woman charioteer, Selene, the Moon goddess of Ancient Greece.  All that remains of her steeds from the east pediment of the Parthenon is a sculpture of "Head of a Horse" which now resides in the British Museum.  I have always loved this sculpture and I owe the portrait of my equine barrel racer to its memory.
