My response to this brief was to create typographic re-interpretation of the Magna Carta, which celebrates its 800th anniversary this year (2015).

Upon researching the Magna Carta, the main problems I encountered with it was that it was written in 800 year old Latin, in one big block of continuous text – not very easy to read or understand.

I selected some of the most interesting clauses and alongside the word-for-word translation, created a form of visual emphasis out of the most relevant phrases with the aim of encouraging the reader to seek out and delve further into those clauses that are of particular interest.

I used red and black, both of which are strong colours and have distinct visual connotations, together with capital letters to emphasis the relative illegibility of the original script. This contrasts with my more legible typesetting, for which I used a font with serifs together with type hierarchy for additional clarity.
