I Think with My Hands
Experimental Book Design
This book design project was for my Design Methodology class at SCAD. The content includes the five assignments with each process and final outcomes.

Concept: According to the content for this book and this class, I chose to present my creative process and final solution for each project by showing my own “sketchbook.” And I directly used Maya Lin’s quote as the name of the book, “I think with My Hands”, which directly reflects the experiments with what I did with my hands for each project and what I learned about the value of craft works to a designer.

Creative Solution: Based on the concept of a sketchbook, I adopted grid paper as the basic element, which is one of the most common sketch papers that graphic designers use. And I decided to use my own hand-writing as the primary font for this book. In order to tightly connect to the concept, the composition is spontaneous on each page, just like the thinking process in our sketchbooks. I also added my own photos into the book to show every final solution and the cover page for the whole book, which emphasizes that the concept is about what I learned and what I designed.

Final Outcome: This book is self-binding. Inserting two single pages with vellum paper makes it more interesting and creates visual version. The goal of this book is to show that it is fun and more experimental for designers to think and design with their hands instead of relying on computers.
