The Brief
This was a personal project that I embarked up on when I was in 3rd year of university. Lately I decided for a throw-back Thursday I'd give it a whole new look.

The piece was based on a Wired magazine editorial on urban vegetable gardens for the community. It was explaining that there was a serious lack of access to fresh produce in parts of LA communities. So an amazing guy, Ron Finley, created a program to start gardening anywhere where there's land in the city - aka, parkways.

The Answer
The concept of this composition came from Ron Finley's innovative uses of space to create these urban gardens. I wanted to represent it by lifting up the composition with these "flaps" of buildings, emphasising the act of finding and making space for these urban gardens.

The colours remained earthy and rich, although not as dark as the original. Decided to throw in some cooler pastels to really contrast with the warmer tones of the soil and farming aspects so the that the "city" stands out but more in harmony.
The Process
The Throwback
The original piece on the left, is what I created way back in university - my university lecturer gave my confidence an enormous boost by purchasing a print of this when I left the course - thank you so much Sue. Looking back, 2 years later, my art-working skills have improved a lot but I'm happy that my concepts were always strong!

Thank You!
