Here is the cover I designed for the winning chapbook in Palettes & Quills 4th Biennial Chapbook Contest. For this cover, I wrapped the image across the the spine and an on to the backcover in order to maintain the artowrk, to create tension on the cover to match the tensions in the poems, and to give a little off-centered movement to the front of the cover.
About the cover art:
“The Abyss” is a 9" x 13" collagraph depicting a primal void, a nightmare of chaos, before awakening and renewal.
Artist Diana Paul has two passions: printmaking and writing. For her, both require careful composing, revealing in clean muted tones and in an understated, elegant way, an illusionist’s window bridging language and image. For Paul, these two creative processes – one visual, the other verbal – are intertwined. In Paul’s upcoming novel, Things Unsaid, as well as in her mixed media prints, the reader/viewer is given a chance to alter preconceived notions about our visual and emotional world.
