So begins the story of this exquisite debut novel, about a Chinese American family living in 1970s small-town Ohio. Lydia is the favorite child of Marilyn and James Lee; their middle daughter, a girl who inherited her mother’s bright blue eyes and her father’s jet-black hair. Her parents are determined that Lydia will fulfill the dreams they were unable to pursue—in Marilyn’s case that her daughter become a doctor rather than a homemaker, in James’s case that Lydia be popular at school, a girl with a busy social life and the center of every party.*
 
In her phenomenal debut Everything I Never Told You(Complex Chinese title: 無聲告白), the Chinese American author Celeste Ng(伍綺詩) profoundly portrays a poignant family story, in which relationship, alienation, carving, secret, race and identity are tightly interwoven.
 
The cover's design direction was divided into two levels. The basic one is that, since the scene of lake is an important spot and somehow represents a sense of liquid relationship in the story, the image of a girl and water was set to construct the fundamental visual tone. The other level is to highlight the title by typographical design approach. The Complex Chinese title 無聲告白 (無 ─ without, nothing; 聲 ─ sound, voice; 告 ─ tell; 白 ─ white, candid) literally means “silent confession”. The embossed parts "耳"(ear) and "口"(mouth) are the radicals of characters 聲 and 告, which were designed to visually and tactilely express the story's core of things are not heard and are not told, and reflects on the moments we all might have experienced in our lives, that everything I never told you.
