Meet the Dream Beans!
At the start of 2016, I joined hackerYou's front-end web development immersive bootcamp. There is a tradition where each class/cohort would decide a name for their cohort. We, cohort 9, decided to be known as The Dream Beans.
Origin Story: As a student in the HY bootcamp, we would use Slack to communicate with mentors, instructors, HY staff and fellow classmates. Our good friend Slackbot will correct you if you are using gender-specific words to address groups as a whole. (Aka, you'll get scolded for using words like guys, dudes, man if you meant to use it in an inclusive manner).
One day, one of our very own got scolded by Slackbot for using "guys". Slackbot, then suggested this alternative:
And that's pretty much the origin story.
Branding: The idea of creating bean emojis came from the pure need to create something cute using Illustrator CC.
My main sources of inspiration came from typical emoji/anime faces, Peas-In-A-Pod from Toy Story and the Disney Tsum Tsum collectibles.
The first drafts aren't always the prettiest...
But that's where the beauty of constructive criticism comes into play. You get just a bit closer to the final product:
The expressions ended up being too small when used as emojis on Slack. So the final revision included bigger expressions and maximum cuteness!
This extended to GIF making...
Desktop and phone wallpapers...
Bean-mojis of our fellow dog mentors...
A few pop-culture beans...
And our very meta-bean, the dreaming dream bean:
What's next: In the works is a parallax web experience that will introduce you to all the dream beans. :)
