Aral Courtyard Sustainability House is a short-term guest housing for visiting scholars in Eskisehir, Turkey. The building which is an old wine factory, consists of nine residential units of different sizes, a storage/utility facility, a courtyard and a lounge/bar. The interior walls of the units are tilted towards south to get more solar energy. This also creates more dynamism in the transitional spaces. Large south skylights provide solar radiation during the day which is emitted by the massive walls in the middle of the units and released during the night to reduce the temperature differences between day and night. All north openings are glazed with transparent insulation to reduce heat loss through windows. The north face of the roof is also covered with drought-resistant ground cover to protect the building from north winds, curb water run-off, prevent city-heat build-up and discharge oxygen. Read Less
