Exploring the concepts of Materialism and the American Dream
The American Dream is within all of us – every citizen of the United States, everyone who wishes to become a citizen. Beneath it all, there is an unquestioned expectation that everything will be flawless, that it might ultimately reach its fantasized final state of perfection, that the windows and doors of opportunity will swing open.
As a country, shaped around these optimistic ideals, we build up this mask of perfection and hide authenticity. The American Dream is a fluctuating concept that grows within our nation as we progress into greater depths of technology and materialism, and it is the same dream that fluctuates within every individual as they move forward in life. These dreams are not the same for everyone, nor are they entirely realistic, yet, they are the dreams which create the illusions that encompass the conceptsof patriotic hope and promise, and that draw the arrows that point us down the road toward the life of success and happiness.
I approached this work from the standpoint of a skeptic of this nationalized dream, as an individual attempting to pull away the masked shell of American society and seek out the unseen imperfections.
I aim to deconstruct the idealistic frameworks of the American Dream and shape them to reflect the masking stereotypes that shadow the reality of what lies beneath.
