The Language of Composition

During the summer of 2013, I started sketching my font and refining it to fit my personal aesthetic. I knew I did not want a product that only represented me, but I wanted to pay homage to the artistic movements that have inspired and shaped my aesthetic. Through the development of “The Language of Composition,” I’ve identified the artists and movements that have inspired me as a designer: Bauhaus, DeStijl, and Neoplasticism. To honor such these artistic movements, I’ve incorporated elements from Jan Tschichold’s, Piet Mondrian’s, Theo Van Doesburg’s aesthetics into my font. The Language of Composition is made of 70 glyphs including letters, numbers, and punctuation marks; most glyphs were created to look as if they had come into existence in a single stroke. My hope in creating The Language of Composition was to remind myself and learn from what centuries of type design have birthed, as well as to show the viewer that type is not only a functional tool, but that each glyph is the refined thought process of a designer.
