X-Files Title Sequence

Working with an open brief for a two-week self-managed project in Motion Tech II, I chose to create an opening title sequence. The primary task of a title sequence is not only to show the cast and crew names, but also to set the tone and theme of a show or movie.

After binge-watching many episodes over the quarter, I chose to recreate the title sequence for The X-Files. The title sequence needed to be a minute and half long, and I only had two weeks to create the piece, so I definitely had my work cut out for me. My primary objective for the project was to keep the aesthetic and visual identity of the show while working completely from scratch.

For this project I was inspired by a piece titled Celestial Dynamics by Kim Taylor. I chose to use illustrative and vintage graphs and imagery to allude to the history of as well as the overall creepiness of the show. I also used various alien-inspired illustrations, symbols, graphs and charts, many of which were inspired from Taylor’s style as well as tattoo flash sheets. The overall theme of the piece is dark and surreal, with plenty of grungy textures and glitch effects.
