Australia House International Competition

Australia House International Competition.

Collaboration: Alan Ting and Jane Caught of SIBLINGS.
Location: Nigata Prefecture, Japan.
Project Year: 2011.
Project Size: 250 sqm.

A proposal for an Artist Residence deep in the mountains of Niigata Prefecture, Japan, this is a key monument in the Echigo Tsumari Art Field Festival. This proposal forthe new Australian House Art Residence Project embodies a gallery space, exhibition space and living space. Five masses are planned to enclose a central courtyard, by being simultaneously broken, open, closed, folded and made adjacent to another. Each provides a different function; utilities, living, working, display and reflection.

The various spaces differ in size and orientation. They are connected by a series of doors and windows framing views of the specific activities and views in the distance. Capturing the spirit of the seasons, our proposal for Australia House reflects the tangible and the intangible multiplicities of the site, ie. Its environs, the people it will receive.
